Leaders of the 15 member countries of the European Union (EU) would meet next Monday in Brussels to discuss the Iraqi crisis, the Greek government, who holds the EU rotating presidency until June 30, announced on Tuesday.
"It has been finalized that the meeting of heads of state and governments will take place on Monday in Brussels. All countries have so far accepted to attend," Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas said.
The emergency meeting was called by Greek Prime Minister CostasSimitis in a bid to narrow the deep divide between EU members overthe looming US-led military operation against Iraq.
So far, Germany and France favor plans to strengthen arms inspections in Iraq to avert war while others, most notably Britain, Italy and Spain, have thrown their support behind the United States for a military attack.
Greece hopes the EU leaders will manage to find some common ground on the Iraq issue at the summit because "Europe needs to have a common stance at this crucial period," Protopapas said.
In addition, a EU foreign ministers meeting is scheduled to be held on next Monday ahead of the summit.
