Italian President Hopes for Peaceful Solution to Iraqi Crisis

Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi said Tuesday that he has not given up hope that the United Nations will find a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to the Sicilian city of Agrigento, Ciampi said he was still trusting the United Nations to
find "conditions to safeguard peace and security by getting Iraq to dismantle all of its weapons of mass destruction."
He said European countries could have a positive influence on the crisis by remaining united in the EU.
This was Ciampi's second appeal for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in less than 24 hours. On Monday, he urged the international community to do everything possible to avert war on Iraq.
Speaking during an official visit to Sicily, Ciampi said, "We must all work and hope for a way out of this terrible problem."
Italy's center-right government led by Premier Silvio Berlusconi has joined Britain in taking a pro-US stance on Iraq, despite opposition by the center-left and strong anti-war sentiment among the Italian public.
