Powell Urges NATO to Provide Help for Turkey
US Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday urged the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to provide military support to help Turkey defend itself in the event of a possible US-led war with Iraq.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday urged the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to provide military support to help Turkey defend itself in the event of a possible US-led war with Iraq.
"This is time for the alliance to say to a fellow alliance member, 'We agree with you, and if you are concerned, we are concerned.' That's what alliances are all about," Powell said at atestimony to the US Senate Budget Committee.
"I hope NATO will be doing the right thing with respect to Turkey within the next 24 hours," the secretary said.
Powell made the remarks as NATO ambassadors are meeting for an emergency session Tuesday to negotiate whether the alliance shouldprovide military assistance to Turkey, a member of the treaty organization.
France, Germany and Belgium on Monday blocked the 19-member alliance to provide such assistance.
In a meeting with visiting Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Monday, Powell criticized the allies for the blocking, saying that the alliance has "an obligation to assist a NATO member who asks for help."
