Tanzania has asked China, one of its long-standing friends, to play an active role in modernizing the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA).
Tanzanian Minister of Communication and Transport Mark J. Mwandosya expressed the hope while welcoming Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, at the Dar es Salaam station of TAZARA.
"TAZARA is now at crossroads. Zambia and Tanzania will tread carefully as we plan to restructure TAZARA. Paramount will be the engagement of China in the restructuring process," Mwandosya said.
"We seek your support in further strengthening the infrastructure, modernizing the locomotive fleet, re-equipping workshops and strengthening the TAZARA center in Mpika," he added.
Mwandosya thanked the Chinese government for its assistance in the feasibility studies, design and construction of the Arusha-Musoma railway line, saying the project is conducive to peace and economic growth of the Great Lakes region.
Li said TAZARA, well-known to every household in China, is a great project and an everlasting monument of the friendship between the Chinese people and the peoples of Tanzania and Zambia.
He also thanked the Tanzanian friends for their support in the construction of TAZARA in the past years.
The 1860.5-km-long TAZARA, with 977.3 km in Tanzania and 883.2 km in Zambia, was completed and opened to traffic in July 1975 after nearly five years' construction by railway experts and workers from China, Tanzania and Zambia.
Li arrived here Sunday for a four-day official goodwill visit to Tanzania.
