East China's bustling business center of Shanghai experienced an unexpected snowfall from midnight Tuesday, the first since the year of the goat began on February 1.

However, most local people were in bed and missed the event as the snowflakes began falling at midnight and suspended around 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Meteorology Center, between5-6 mm of snow fell in areas where the snowfall was heaviest like the city proper and the northern suburban areas. And the Baoshan area where the famous Baogang Steel Complex is located, recorded as much as 1.3 mm. in just one hour.

According to chief forecaster Yao Zuqing at the Shanghai Municipal Meteorological Center, the sudden snow was caused by a cold front coming from the north.

Since the ground surface temperature remained above zero degree Celsius, the snow melted quickly and urban traffic was barely affected.

Apart from the temporary closure of expressways leading to neighboring provinces, surface traffic remained normal throughout the metropolis and air services at Hongqiao and Pudong international airports were not disrupted.
