Israeli President Authorizes Sharon to Form New Government

Israeli President Moshe Katsav met Prime Minister Ariel Sharon Sunday afternoon in his Jerusalem residence, and authorized him to form the 30th Israeli government within 42 days.
Katsav's authorization came after his consultation with representatives of other Knesset (Israeli parliament) parties.
If Sharon succeeds in forming the coalition in the limited period, he would become the new government's prime minister.
Sharon's Likud party, which won the general elections for the 16th Knesset late last month, is expected to begin negotiations with other parties elected to the Knesset on forming a coalition.
A Likud negotiating team is to meet their counterparts of other factions in the coming days.
The influential Labor party, the favorite Sharon wants for the future coalition, is highly possible to become a major opposition, with Labor Chairman Amram Mitzna vowing on Saturday not send a negotiating team to meet with Sharon.
Without Labor's support, analysts believe the prime minister would unite his Likud, the secular Shinui and the National Religious party to establish a narrow coalition, which will control 61 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.
