"We can disarm Saddam Hussein without war," French President Jacques Chirac told his American counterpart George W. Bush in a telephone conversation Friday.

During the 15-minute conversation, Chirac said France and the Untied States share the same goal on the Iraqi issue, which is the disarmament of Iraq, said Chirac's spokeswoman Catherine Colonna.

"But He (Chirac) has reaffirmed to him (Bush) the conviction that there is always an alternative to war to achieve this," she said.

"We can disarm Saddam Hussein without war" if we provide the United Nations inspections with reinforced means and have the cooperation from the Iraqi side, she cited Chirac as telling Bush.

On his part, Bush said he wishes to maintain contact with Chirac because "he attaches importance to the relations between France and the United States, which are two friends-nations, just like his personal relations with the French president," according to the spokeswoman.

Bush on Thursday said Iraqi president Saddam Hussein had thrown away his "final chance" and that "the game is over." He pressed for a second UN resolution ordering military actions on Iraq.

On Friday, Chirac reaffirmed that France always considers war as the worst of solutions and opposes to any military action without UN mandate.
