Challenging the United Nations to back its words with actions, US President George W. Bush said on Thursday that the United States would welcome a new UN resolution on Iraq that should show the world body's resolve to disarm Saddam Hussein.
"Now the Security Council will show whether its words have any meaning," Bush said in a televised statement at the White House after private talks with US Secretary of State Colin Powell, who made the US case against Iraq to the UN Security Council Wednesday.
"Having made its demands, the Security Council must not back down when those demands are defied and mocked by a dictator," Bushsaid.
"The United States would welcome the support of a new resolution which makes clear that the Security Council stands behind its previous demands," he said. "Yet resolutions mean little without resolve."
Bush warned if the United Nations was not prepared to act, the United States would act at head of a coalition of countries to disarm Iraq.
