South Korean President Kim Dae-jung's second son, Kim Hong-up, on Friday was sentenced by Seoul High Court to two years in prison and 564,000 US dollars in fines for taking bribes and evading taxes.

Kim Hong-up once has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison along with 500 million won (380,000 US dollars) in finesand an additional penalty of 560 million won (466,666 dollars) by Seoul District Court on charges of bribery last November.

The Seoul High Court deemed South Korean people were disappointed with Kim Hong-up for he used his special status for his own personal gain.

"Heavy punishment is inevitable in order to prevent a recurrence of such incidents," the ruling of the court was quoted by the Yonhap News as saying.

"However, the court took into consideration the fact that the defendant was in some ways utilized by some guys around him, and that he deeply regrets his wrongdoings," said the report.

Kim Hong-up's assistants were also sentenced to from 18 months to four years in prison and fines of between 650 million and 2.06 billion won.

They were charged with brokering meetings between Kim and the businessmen to arrange bribes in exchange for special favors.

Kim Hong-up was indicted last July for dodging taxes and accepting 2.5 billion won (2.08 million dollars) in bribes and another 2.2 billion won (1.83 million dollars) as "political donations" from major corporations.

The South Korean president's youngest son, Kim Hong-gul, is also undergoing a trial on graft charges.
