The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is to introduce a set of new trade marks rules, which will be gazetted on February 7 and tabled at the Legislative Council on February 12, the government announced Wednesday.
The rules are the Trade Marks Ordinance (Commencement) Notice 2003 and the new Trade Marks Rules, aimed to be put into operationon April 4, 2003, a spokesman for the Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau said.
The new Trade Marks Ordinance will, when brought into operation, replace the existing Trade Marks Ordinance which was enacted in 1955.
The new trade marks rules set out the detailed procedures relating to application for registration, renewal, opposition to registration and other technical matters, the spokesman said, "They will modernize Hong Kong's trade mark law, simplify the registration of trade marks, increase the range of signs that can be registered as marks and provide increased protection to trade marks."
"Moreover, as the trade mark registration procedures will be streamlined and the fees payable under the rules will be reduced, the new law will help reduce business cost in trade mark registration and other related procedures," the spokesman added.
