Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday had phone talks with his US counterpart George W. Bush on issues of Iraq and Palestine, the official MENA news agency reported.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday had phone talks with his US counterpart George W. Bush on issues of Iraq and Palestine, the official MENA news agency reported.
"The two leaders exchanged views on the Iraqi crisis within the framework of current discussions at the UN Security Council and in the international arena," MENA said.
They also discussed the Mideast peace process and agreed to continue contact and consultations on issues of mutual interest, itsaid, adding that during the phone talks, Mubarak asserted that it is important to continue efforts and coordination to reach peacefulsolutions to both issues.
The Mubarak-Bush phone conversation came shortly before the UN Security Council convened a high-level open meeting on the Iraqi crisis, during which US Secretary of State Colin Powell provided importance intelligence showing Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction and violating UN disarming resolution.
Under UN Resolution 1441, Iraq must fully account for its weapons of mass destruction or face "serious consequences."
The United States has accused Iraq of constituting a "material breach" of the resolution, and threatened to disarm Iraq by force if necessary.
A US-led war on Iraq looms large as the United States has stepped up its military buildup in the Gulf Region.
Egypt, a close US ally in the Middle East, has called for a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis within the UN framework.
