Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said here Wednesday that China stands for continued inspections by United Nations for weapons of mass destruction(WMD)in Iraq.
He told reporters after the UN Security Council meeting on the Iraq issue that China welcomes the move by the United States to provide information and evidence on Iraq's WMDs to the council and believes such a move is consistent with the spirit of resolution 1441 and could help increase transparency on the issue.
Tang said the information and evidence provided by the United States and other countries can be submitted to the United Nation Monitoring and Verification and Inspection Committee (UNMVIC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for on-the-spot verification to get to the truth.
He urged Iraq to adopt a more constructive attitude, strengthen its cooperation with the United Nations, and comply with the relevant council resolutions in a strict, comprehensive and practical manner so as to clarify the outstanding questions as soon as possible.
The minister reiterated China's stand for a political solution of the Iraq issue and urged the international community to continue working together to that end.
