United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed George Alleyne of Barbados as hisspecial envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean countries, a UN spokesman said on Tuesday.
Alleyne, a former official of the World Health Organization, will be responsible for ensuring follow-up to the UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS and the Pan-Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS, in the Caribbean region, spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters.
He said Alleyne will work closely with Caribbean leaders, with the United Nations team and resident coordinator in each country he visits, with the Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the Caribbean Community (Caricom).
The Pan-Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS represents Caricom countries and the Dutch, French and Spanish-speaking islands in the Caribbean sea.
The Caribbean, one of the regions ravaged by HIV/AIDS, has nearly half a million people living with HIV/AIDS, and a hefty 2.2-percent adult prevalence rate, second only to Africa's, according to UNAIDS figures.
