Russia opposes expanding US military presence in Korean Peninsula
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on Tuesday that Russia is against expansion of the US military presence in the Korean Peninsula.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on Tuesday that Russia is against expansion of the US military presence in the Korean Peninsula.
"We are convinced that any expansion of the US military presence on the Korean Peninsula and around it as an element of increasing pressure on North Korea (DPRK) would play a negative role," Yakovenko was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying in a statement.
"This would not advance a desired settlement of the problem through negotiations but could provoke a retaliatory response instead," he noted.
"There is no and cannot be an alternative to peaceful settlement of the crisis through negotiations," Yakovenko said.
US defense officials said Monday that the US Defense Departmentis thinking about sending an aircraft carrier to the waters off the coast of the Korean peninsula and adding more air force presence in the region as a show of force amid the developing nuclear crisis with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
"We are convinced that the main element of diplomatic resolution of the so-called nuclear problem of North Korea must bedirect dialogue between the DPRK and the US, although other countries, including Russia, could also be involved in creating a mechanism of guarantees," Yakovenko said. "Internationalization ofthis issue right now would be counterproductive," he noted.
