UN arms inspectors find empty chemical warhead north of Baghdad

UN weapons inspectors on Tuesday found another empty chemical warhead north of Baghdad in their daily hunt for prohibited weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, their spokesman Hiro Ueki said.

UN weapons inspectors on Tuesday found another empty chemical warhead north of Baghdad in their daily hunt for prohibited weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, their spokesman Hiro Ueki said.

"An empty Sakr-18 chemical warhead" was found at the Al Taji Ammunition Depot, north of Baghdad, Ueki said, adding that the warhead was "tagged and secured."

"This is the same type of chemical warhead as was found at the Ukhaider Ammunition Storage area on Jan. 16," the spokesman said.

Ueki had reported in a statement on Jan. 16 that the UN inspectors "discovered 11 empty 122 mm chemical warheads and one warhead that requires further evaluation" when they were visiting "the Ukhaider Ammunition Storage Area to inspect a large group of bunkers constructed in the late 1990's."

Three days later, Iraq told the UN inspectors that it had found four more such warheads at Taji and handed them over to the UN experts.

Also on Tuesday, UN inspection teams visited about a dozen suspected sites in Iraq, including the Al Rafah missile test stand,130 km southwest of Baghdad, ueki said.

The UN weapons experts resumed their hunting for prohibited weapons of mass destruction in Iraq on Nov. 27 after a four-year suspension, and have so far searched more than 500 suspected sites.
