The majority of Australians are opposed to a war against Iraq, The Australians daily reported Tuesday.
The daily announced the result of its news poll conducted last week, which indicated 76 percent of Australians are against military action without UN endorsement, while 57 percent would support a war with UN approval.
On Monday, the daily reported that divisions have deepened within the ruling Liberal Party over the issue with former party president John Valder along with several former frontbenchers launching the group Liberals Against War on Iraq on Sunday.
The 71-year-old politician said, "I do not understand why John Howard has thrown in his lot so fully with George Bush on this without any qualification."
Prime Minister John Howard is to visit the United States and Britain next week to talk with US president George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair on the looming war.
He described his forthcoming visit as a peace mission. Stressing again and again his government had not yet made any decision on involvement in a war, he actually has sent about 500 soldiers to the Persian Gulf who have been deployed according to US plans, with another 1,500 reportedly to be dispatched.
