Canadians React to US Shuttle Tragedy with Sorrow

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien on Sunday expressed condolences to the families of the dead shuttle crew of Columbia on behalf of all Canadians.

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien on Sunday expressed condolences to the families of the dead shuttle crew of Columbia on behalf of all Canadians.

"The seven astronauts on board were accomplished women and men of great courage who put their extraordinary skills and knowledge to the service of humankind," Chretien said in a news release.

"Our prayers are with you and with the people of the United States and Israel during this tragic time," added Chretien, who later spoke by telephone to US President George W. Bush.

Canadian Governor General Adrienne Clarkson also offered her condolences, hailing the dead astronauts for their contributions to science and humankind's understanding of the universe.

Marc Garneau, Canada's first astronaut, said Sunday that the shuttle disaster in the United States was the news he never wantedto hear.

"It's the kind of day you dread, but you know all too well can occur," said Garneau, who in 1984 became the first Canadian to travel into space and is now president of the Canadian Space Agency.
