The Iraqi crisis can be resolved if Iraq complies with the United Nations resolutions, Commissioner forEurope Union External Relations Chris Patten said here on Monday.
"It depends on Baghdad and (Iraqi President) Saddam Hussein," Patten said at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi after a closed-door meeting.
While both men renewed peace call, Patten said the UN resolutions on Iraq should be implemented in full and Saddam shouldwork with UN arms inspectors to secure the disarmament which the international community wants to see.
"I think there is broad support in the European Union for tryingto ensure that so far as possible the inspectors are able to disarmIraq and that there is for once and all compliance with the authority for the UN," Patten said.
Patten arrived in Tehran on Monday for a three-day visit on the first leg of his three-nation tour which will later take him to Turkey and Lebanon.
Patten is here for negotiations on mutual trade and cooperation agreement with Iran.
He is expected to hold talks with Iranian President Mohammad Khatami and Parliament Speaker Mehdi Karroubi.
