Arab foreign ministers will hold an emergency meeting in Cairo in mid-February in anticipation of an imminent US-led war against Iraq, Lebanese Foreign Minister MahmoudHammoud said on Monday.
Hammoud made the announcement after his meeting with visiting Secretary General of Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa, the Oriental radio said.
Hammoud said he had contacted 18 Arab foreign ministers and thatconsensus was reached to hold the ministerial meeting on the key Iraq and Palestine issues.
"We want to do all we can to avoid military action," Hammoud said, stressing that there is always room for diplomacy.
Moussa said all Arabs are opposed to a military offensive against Iraq. He noted that he is ready to make a visit to Iraq to meet Saddam should the need arise.
The AL chief also predicted that the Arab summit originally scheduled for March 23 in Bahrain would be held earlier.
