The United States may imposed a temporary administration over Iraq after its strongman Saddam Hussein is toppled, a leading Egyptian newspaper quoted a senior USofficial as saying on Sunday.
The United States will has to administer Iraq for a certain period of time after its "liberation" from the regime of President Saddam Hussein, US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice told the Arabic-language al-Ahram newspaper.
She said the Iraqi people will be able to run their own affairs after they are liberated from Saddam's regime, adding during the post-Saddam era, the United States needs to maintain its forces forsome time to restore order.
This, according to Rice, would ensure that there are no acts of violence, Iraq's unity is maintained and humanitarian aid reaches the Iraqi people.
The United States is amassing tens of thousands of troops in theGulf region for a possible war on Iraq, which Washington charges with seeking weapons of mass destruction.
