According to Kyodo News, the Japanese government rushed to assess the situation, conceding the disaster is expected to affectJapan's space program in a number of ways.
"Representing the Japanese government and people, I pray for the souls of the crew members who proceeded with the mission courageously ... and would like to express my heart felt condolences to their families," Koizumi said in the message.
Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi also sent a message of condolence to US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Kyodo said.
Columbia broke up at high altitudes on Saturday before it was due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida following a 16-day space mission.
