Ba'asyir Involved in Bali Bombings: Police Chief
Indonesian National Police Chief Da'i Bachtiar said that Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir took part in last year's Bali bombings, the national news agency Antara reported here Sunday.

The police chief said that the conclusion was made after the investigations of a number of suspects who are currently detained by the police.
He said that 64-year-old Ba'asyir attended several meetings with Bali bombing suspects before and after the bloody blasts, buthe declined to elaborate.
However, he also admitted that police has yet found informationabout the detail of the meetings.
Ba'asyir was put in jail last October, only several days after the Bali bombings, for alleged involvement in a series of bombingsduring the Christmas eve in 2000 and a plot to assassinate Megawati Soekarnoputri, who was then the country's vice president.
Ba'asyir has repeatedly denied involvement in the bombings. Hislawyer, M. Assegaf, said that police has accused Ba'asyir for the Bali bombings since the beginning of the investigation.
He said Ba'asyir even denied having held meetings with some of the Bali bombing suspects and had asked the police to confront himwith the suspects.
