Egyptian Interior Minister HabibIbrahim el-Adli on Sunday warned against any security problem at home in case of a war on Iraq.
"A possible US strike against Iraq has been carefully studied at security level, and preparations have been made to deal with its effects at home," he was quoted as saying by the official MENA news agency.
Speaking at a gathering in the city of Ismailia, about 120 km northeast of Cairo, Adli said problems, including departure of foreigners and return of Egyptians from abroad, are expected in the event of a war on Iraq.
"There will be no leniency toward any attempt to affect Egypt's interests," he said.
He also gave a firm warning "to opportunists who try to exploit certain situation and those who try to pose as heroes and manipulate the situation to serve their own interests and move toserve certain quarters."
"Banned groups in Egypt are under the full control of security agencies, and they pose no danger at all," he said, adding security agencies will act to preempt "plots hatched in the dark."A US war threat against Iraq has sparked anti-US protests throughout the Arab world, while US soldiers and citizens in the Gulf have been targeted.
Egypt has stepped up surveillance and control over extremist groups at home since the deadly anti-US terror attacks in September2001.
