UN Inspectors Search 11 Iraqi Sites for Banned Weapons

UN arms inspectors on Sunday visited 11 sites in Iraq in their daily hunt for prohibited weapons of mass destruction, an Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman said in astatement.

UN arms inspectors on Sunday visited 11 sites in Iraq in their daily hunt for prohibited weapons of mass destruction, an Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman said in astatement.

Seven experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)flew by helicopter to the Akashat phosphate mine, some 400 km westof Baghdad.

Another inspection team from the United Nations Monitoring,Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) carried out anaerial survey by helicopter over the city of Baquba, some 50 kmnorth of Baghdad, in the Diyala Province.

A UNMOVIC chemical team drove to the stores belonging to theMinistry of Irrigation in Al-Wadha district south of Baghdad.Three teams of UNMOVIC missile experts separately visited theal-Qa Qaa high explosives factory, 50 km south of Baghdad, theSumood factory at Abu Ghraib area on Baghdad's west suburbs, andthe al-Milad Military Research and Development Company, some 30 kmsouth of the capital.

Two teams of UNMOVIC biological experts separately inspected adairy factory, also at Abu Ghraib, which belongs to the Ministry ofIndustry and Minerals, and the al-Nu'man state company on Baghdad'ssouth outskirts, which is affiliated with the MilitaryIndustrialization Commission.

A UNMOVIC multi-disciplinary team paid their unannounced visitto a site of the Second Corps of the Iraqi Army at Maqdadia, some150 km east of Baghdad, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the UNMOVIC multi-disciplinary team based in Mosul,some 400 km north of Baghdad, traveled to the Arbil University andinspected the biology and chemical departments of the ScienceCollege.

The UN weapons experts resumed their hunting for prohibitedweapons of mass destruction in Iraq on Nov. 27 after a four-yearsuspension and have so far searched more than 500 suspected sites.
