On the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year, Wang Zaixi, vice-director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, conveyed Spring Festival greetings to the compatriots in Taiwan over the radio.
Reviewing the cross-Straits relationship over the past year, Wang pointed out that although the Taiwan authorities refused to accept the one-China policy and the political stalemate was not dissolved, the mainstream will of the Taiwanese was to pursue peace, stability and development.
Therefore, more and more Taiwanese supported the three direct links of trade, shipping and mail, and some Taiwan compatriots contributed much to realize the links, Wang said.
He noted that in the new year, China would continue to adhere to the basic principles of peaceful reunification, "one country, two systems" and President Jiang Zemin's eight-point proposal for resolving the Taiwan issue to realize the three direct links as soon as possible.
Wang called for the Taiwan authorities to fully consider the long-term interests of Taiwan and accept the one-China policy as soon as possible. Provided the Taiwan authorities accepted the policy, any other issues were negotiable.
