Blix Ready to Meet Saddam If Invited

Chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix said at the UN Headquarters in New York on Friday that he was ready to hold talks with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein if invited by the latter.

Chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix said at the UN Headquarters in New York on Friday that he was ready to hold talks with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein if invited by the latter.

Speaking to reporters, Blix said that if Iraq suggested such a meeting, "certainly we would be meeting him (Saddam)."

However, Blix declined to say whether he and Mohamed ElBaradei,head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, would visit Baghdad in early February in response to an invitation extended byan adviser to Saddam on Thursday.

Amir al-Saadi, the adviser, invited Blix and ElBaradei for talks in Baghdad before Feb. 10.

Blix and ElBaradei visited Iraq on Jan. 19-20. They will reportback to the UN Security Council on Feb. 14.
