China Hopes Thailand, Cambodia Settle Unrest Calmly

Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing Thursday with the ambassadors of Thailand and Cambodia respectively on the issue of violence on Wednesday in Phnom Penh, which was aimed at Thailand.

Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi met here Thursday with the ambassadors of Thailand and Cambodia respectively on the issue of violence on Wednesday in Phnom Penh, which was aimed at Thailand.

Wang said during the meetings that both Thailand and Cambodia were members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),and friendly neighbors of China, which felt regret at the violenceon Wednesday.

He said China had always opposed violence and he believed the two countries' governments could resolve the issue calmly in a bidto bring bilateral relations back on track as soon as possible.

China hoped ASEAN member countries could maintain solidarity and stability, Wang said.

Cambodian protesters set the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh on fireWednesday after they entered the embassy to protest against a Thaimovie star's reported comment that the world-renowned Angkor Wat temple belonged to Thailand. The actress denied the reports.

Some Thai diplomats in Phnom Penh returned to Thailand on a military plane Thursday.
