Iraqi Trade Minister Mohammad MehdiSalah said on Thursday that it is Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, not US President George W. Bush, who provides food for Iraqi people.
Salah made the remarks at a press conference two days after Bushpromised in his State of the Union address to "bring to the Iraqi people food and medicines and supplies -- and freedom" following any war against Iraq.
The minister said the Iraqi government has so far distributed five months of food rations to every family and will continue to doso even in case of a US-led military war against the country.
At the same news conference, Iraqi Health Minister Umid Medhat Mubarak said the government has prepared to deal with casualties inthe possible war.
"Although we do not hope that war will occur, we would like to assure every body that we are prepared to save lives as we are always doing that," he told reporters.
"Everything is prepared. The medical staff, especially the surgical staff in Iraq have good experience in life-saving measures," the health minister added.
The United States accuses Iraq of secretly developing weapons ofmass destruction and is pouring tens of thousands of troops into the Gulf region to back up its threats to disarm Baghdad by force.
