The Thai government has asked the Cambodian ambassador Ung Sean to leave the kingdom as soon as possible, the Foreign Ministry's spokesman Sihasak Phuangkepkeow said on Thursday.

The Foreign Ministry summoned the Cambodian ambassador at nine o'clock in the morning, Sihasak told the press conference after the meeting.

During the meeting, he said, the Thai government protested "in the strongest term against the failure on the part of the royal government of Cambodia to discharge its obligation under international law."

The Thai Embassy in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh was seriously damaged during an angry demonstration, which took place early Wednesday after remarks about the Angkor Wat were apparently mistakenly ascribed to a Thai soap opera star.

In the protest given to Cambodian Ambassador Ung Sean, the Thai government declared that "all ongoing government projects on technique and economic cooperation between the two countries are henceforth suspended."

Sihasak noted, among those coming back from Cambodia are seven wounded people, and one of them has died. Some 500 Thai people from Phnom Penh arrived safely in Bangkok Thursday morning.

According to the spokesman, Cambodian Ambassador Ung Sean expressed his regret over the incident, and sincerely hoped to resolve the problem and pull back the bilateral relations to the normal track.

The violence happened in Phnom Penh was backed by only a small group of Cambodians, Ung Sean said, and was directly related to the country's internal politics.

The Thai government has sent troops to protect Ung Sean, who is currently in Bangkok.

At the press conference, Sihasak reiterated that the Thai government demanded Cambodia to apologize formally, make compensation for the Thai people and government, and arrest those responsible for the riot.

The Thai Foreign Ministry has called in ambassadors of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and those of China,Japan and South Korea to brief the situation.
