Saddam Says Iraq Ready to 'Defeat' US Troops
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein vowed Wednesday that Iraq was ready to "destroy" and "defeat" the American troops, and warned that the United States would pay a high price if it attacked his country.
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein vowed Wednesday that Iraq was ready to "destroy" and "defeat" the American troops, and warned that the United States would pay a high price if it attacked his country.
Saddam made the remarks during a meeting with military officers, which was later broadcast on Iraqi TV.
He stressed that the Americans had no right to attack Iraq, saying that the Iraqi people "never allowed foreigners to stay on their homeland."
The Iraqi leader also said that the Iraqi armed forces were better prepared now than during the 1991 Gulf War.
In another development, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday in Washington that the United States is willing to help find a place for Saddam if he decides to choose exile to avoid war.
"With respect to exile, if he (President Saddam) were to leave the country and take some of his family members with him and others in the leading elite who have been responsible for so much trouble during the course of his regime, we would, I'm sure, try to help find a place for them to go," Powell said at a joint press conference with visiting Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri.
"That certainly would be one way to avoid war, and we've indicated this before," the secretary added.
