Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra threatened to send troops to help restore order in the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh which was set on fire Wednesday by Cambodia protesters.

Thousands of Cambodian students stormed into the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh by climbing over fences and walls, threw stones into the compound, smashing at least four windows, and then set fire to the building, expressing anger at the alleged comments apparently mistakenly ascribed to a Thai soap star on Angkor Wat temple, Cambodia's top cultural icon.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra expressed dismay at the damage to the embassy and said he could send in Thai troops to help restore order.

The premier said he could not connect with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen and threatened that if the Cambodia side could not restore order within one hour and the situation could not return to normal, he would send in Thai commando units to help Cambodia.
