Thaksin Declares Indefinite Close of Thai Embassy in Cambodia
Thailand decided to close its embassy in Phnom Penh and the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok indefinitely, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Wednesday in Bangkok.
Thailand decided to close its embassy in Phnom Penh and the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok indefinitely, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Wednesday in Bangkok.
The prime minister announced the decision after the Thai Embassy at the Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh was burned in a demonstration.
He said the two embassies won't be opened until the Cambodian government provides reasonable explanation for the event.
Thaksin noted that he has canceled the order of sending troops to Phnom Penh, but the government will send aircraft tomorrow to pick up Thais in Cambodia.
The prime minister earlier threatened to send troops to help restore order around the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh, which was burned to ruins by Cambodia protesters on Wednesday.
Thousands of Cambodian students, angry about remarks apparentlymistakenly ascribed to a Thai soap opera star about Angkor Wat temple, climbed into the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh, threw rocks into the compound, smashing at least four windows, and then set fire to it.
Learning the news, Thaksin warned that if Cambodia could not restore order within one hour and the situation could not return to normal, he would send in Thai commando units to help.
