Military Action by Iraq Will be Suicidal: Kuwaiti Defense Minister
Kuwaiti Defense Minister SheikhJaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Wednesday warned that any hostile military action by the Iraqi regime against his country would be suicidal.
Kuwaiti Defense Minister SheikhJaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Wednesday warned that any hostile military action by the Iraqi regime against his country would be suicidal.
"I mean every word I say and any Iraqi military action against Kuwait will be suicidal," Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak told reporters following a session of the National Assembly (parliament.)
He said Iraqi President Saddam Hussein "could embark on unpredictable action," although "this remains a possibility."
Asked whether Kuwait would allow the United States to use its territory to launch a war on Iraq without a UN resolution, the defense minister said such a decision would be taken by the political leadership to serve the national interests.
On Monday, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. that Baghdad might retaliate if Kuwait opens the border for a US-led invasion into Iraq.
Kuwait and the United States signed a defense pact after the 1991 Gulf War when a US-led alliance drove Iraqi troops out of the emirate after a seven-month occupation.
A total of 17,000 US troops have been deployed in Kuwait, with more arriving every week as the US military buildup continues in the Gulf region.
Kuwait is intensifying preparations for a possible war fallout, although it still holds that a peaceful solution could avert the prospect of a second Gulf war.
