China registered a double-digit growth in the catering sector for the 12th year running in 2002, with the turnover reaching 509 billion yuan (61.54 billion US dollars).

The figure was 16.5 percent more than the previous year and accounted for 5.1 percent of China's gross domestic product last year, according to statistics from the China Hotels Association.

Private enterprises played a key role in China's catering sector. Fifty-two of the 100 top catering enterprises for 2002 named by the association are private enterprises and they generated 45.1 percent of the total turnover of the top 100 enterprises.

Consumption during holidays contributed to much of the total turnover of China's catering sector in 2002.

Statistics show that the national turnover in the catering sector increased by 26 percent, 31 percent and 20 percent respectively during the three major holiday periods, including 2002 Spring Festival, International Labor Day, and National Day which fell on October 1.

The turnover of the catering sector during the holiday periods reached 250 billion yuan (30.22 billion US dollars), or nearly half of the total amount for last year.

At present, slap-up meals at hotels, special snacks that feature Chinese cuisine and fast foods featuring both Chinese and foreign flavors are available to meet the tastes of different consumer groups in China.

The promotion of catering services, such as the "kitchen project" to encourage the sale of pre-prepared meals, and the "breakfast project" under which companies were encouraged to offer breakfast to rushed workers, have liberated more Chinese from household chores.

And the fact that evermore Chinese people ate out was one of the driving forces behind the bustling catering business, insiderspointed out.
