Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will not attend the extraordinary summit of the African Union which is scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, from Feb. 3 to 4, a reliable source told Xinhua Tuesday.

The source, who asked not to be named, said the president will send an Egyptian delegation headed by a senior official to attend the summit.

In the year of 1995, Mubarak had experienced an assassination attempt when his motorcade was on the way to his hotel where he would stay.

The extraordinary summit, which is the first since the AU formally launched in July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, will mainly focus on the issues of amendment of the AU Constitution Actand the peace in Burundi as well as the economic development in the African continent.

Earlier, Hailekiros Gessese, head of the Ethiopian National Coordinating Committee, said Ethiopia has finalized every preparation to host the summit and all the materials and the necessary manpower have been adequately put in place to accommodate the expected 53 heads of states.

Concerning the security aspect during the summit, he said "we have learned from the incident back in 1995. And since then, sevenyears have elapsed. In those seven years, we have tackled many attempts of terrorist acts in Ethiopia."

"Our security forces and security organization is comfortable with all the experience and has drawn many lessons from other countries. So, from the security aspect, we are very comfortable in that we have reliable arrangements to make sure that the session will be held smoothly," he added. (by Li Dawei)
