The Taiwan authorities are promising to consider approving more charter flights to the mainland for upcoming major holidays.

One day after China Airlines' historic mainland flight, Taiwan's No.3 ranking leader Yu Shyi-kun says existing policies are being reviewed and ice-breaking moves may expand to include charter flights for the dragon boat festival in June.

Taiwan businesses have invested about 100 billion US dollars on the mainland over the past decade.

An estimated 500 thousand Taiwan people are on the mainland at any one time.

Most are growing increasingly impatient with Taiwan's ban on direct links, which forces them to change planes at a third point, such as Hong Kong or Macau, before traveling to the mainland.

A direct Taipei-Shanghai flight would only take a little more than one hour.
