Hundreds of people braved the bitter winter weather rallying across the street from the UN headquarters in New York on Monday morning to protest of a potential US-led war against Iraq.

The protesters held placards reading "no war for oil" and "stand strong against neo-imperial American policies," and chanted anti-US slogans.

The demonstration took place not long before UN weapons inspectors' briefing to the UN Security Council at 1530 GMT on the progress of inspection work.

The report has been seen as crucial by Washington to argue for a prompt military action against Iraq.

Washington has maintained that Iraq had missed the last chance provided by UN Resolution 1441, and warned that time is running out for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
