France Urges Security Council to Give Inspectors More Time
French ambassador to the United Nations La Sabliere said at the UN Headquarters in New York Monday that the inspectors should be given a realistic opportunity to achieve their goals in a peaceful manner.
French ambassador to the United Nations La Sabliere said at the UN Headquarters in New York Monday that the inspectors should be given a realistic opportunity to achieve their goals in a peaceful manner.
He reiterated that the common goal of the Security Council is to fully disarm Iraq and to do it peacefully. But he stressed thatthe question of whether this can be done is up to Iraq.
He urged Iraq to comply fully, citing the reports by the two chief inspectors had indicated there was still ample room for better and more proactive cooperation from the Iraqi side.
He said that since the UN Security Council now has the most powerful inspection teams ever at its disposal, this tool of inspection should be used to the full.
The ambassador also hoped that the Security Council will be united on the issue. "Only in this way can we hope to achieve the goal of complete and full disarmament of Iraq."
The United States and Britain are threatening to invade Iraq, arguing that Iraq has shown over the past two months an unwillingness to comply with UN Security Council resolutions. Other council members, however, are calling for more time before making decisive assessments.
UN chief Kofi Annan also said earlier Monday that the weapons inspectors should be given more time to do their jobs and Iraq should be disarmed peacefully.
France is currently the rotating chairman of the Security Council.
