The first Taiwan commercial flight to the mainland in more than five decades has completed its journey on Sunday, in a step toward ending a ban on direct travel between the two sides.

The Taiwan-based China Airlines jumbo jet flew to Shanghai Sunday, with a brief stop in Hong Kong, to pick up 243 Taiwan passengers going home for the Lunar New Year - the year's biggest holiday for the nation.

Officials from both sides waved as the purple and white Boeing 747-400 took off from Shanghai's Pudong Airport.

About four hours later, the jet arrived on time at Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek International Airport after another brief stop in Hong Kong.
