Powell Says US Reserves Right to Wage War on Iraq
The United States will continue to reserve the right to take military action against Iraq with or without the backing of the United Nations, US Secretary of the State Colin Powell said in Davos at the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) on Sunday.
The United States will continue to reserve the right to take military action against Iraq with or without the backing of the United Nations, US Secretary of the State Colin Powell said in Davos at the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) on Sunday.
Although an anti-American sense dominated this year's annual WEF meeting, Powell still justified the US military determination.
He said the UN Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 1441, however, Iraq failed to provide accurate, full and complete information on its weapons of mass destruction as required.
He said after six weeks of arms inspections in Iraq, the international community is still struggling to know the answers to key questions.
The UN chief arms inspector Hans Blix and the International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Mohamed Elbaradei will report to the UN Security Council on Monday.
The secretary of state said the US government will study the report with gravity and then exchange views with other members of the council.
Referring to the ongoing nuclear standoff on the Korean Peninsula, Powell said the US has no intention of attacking the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
He said the US is willing to negotiate with the DPRK about how it meets the obligation of abandoning its nuclear weapons program, adding the US will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the DPRK.
