South Korean Internet services have been shut down nationwide since Saturday afternoon in an apparent cyber terror committed by hackers.
It is the first time that the country's wired and mobile Internet services were shut down nationwide, according to the Ministry of Information and Communication.
The unprecedented nationwide shutdown began with SK Telecom and KTF Telecom whose Nate and Magic N mobile Internet services faltered nationwide at around 1400 local time (0500 GMT).
The service shutdown then spread to all of the Internet service firms including KT (Korean Telecom), Hanaro Telecom, and other service providers.
An official of the ministry said, "It is highly likely hackers have launched an all-out attack on the country's Internet system."
The official assumed hackers put a huge amount of data into the KT's DNS (Domain Name Service).
Information and Communication Minister Lee Sang-chul reportedly instructed officials of the ministry which has declared a emergency working status Saturday afternoon.
Internet shopping malls turned out to be the biggest victims of the Internet shutdown. And people could not use the internet services as browsing web page, sending email and using internet telephone up to now.
The Internet shutdown, however, had a limited impact on the country's financial, corporate and public sectors with most banks and other financial institutions having Saturdays off and corporations and government offices having closed doors in the afternoon, analysts said.
