The two-day Executive Council Meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP) ended Saturday in Beijing.

Li Peng, AAPP president and chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), presided over the closing ceremony.

After in-depth discussions over the past two days, participants reached broad consensus on conducting legislative exchanges and boosting regional cooperation, Li said in his closing speech.

Summing up the meeting, Li said participants agreed a lot could be done by the AAPP in developing legislation exchanges and promoting the rule of law in Asian countries.

Participants maintained that when sharing legislative experience and practices, Asian parliaments should focus on such key areas as economics, security, education, culture, science and technology, Li said.

"Such exchanges are conducive to a better approach to sustainable development, compatibility between domestic legislation and international rules and a joint response to non-traditional security threats, thus boosting national and regional security and safeguarding world peace and stability," Li said.

Delegates shared the view that enhancing regional cooperation and promoting common development constituted an important policy for Asian countries, Li said.

Participants held that regional cooperation in Asia should be based on existing cooperative channels and its scope should widen gradually. Cooperation should be focused on the economic front and gradually expand across the board.

Delegates urged more respect for diversity among Asian countries and greater attention to the least developed nations to achieve a balanced development in the region.

Some delegates stated their views at the meeting on international and regional issues of common concern, including the Middle East, Iraq and counter-terrorism.

Participants listened to a report by the Speaker of the Philippines' House of Representatives Jose De Venecia on the theme, agenda and relevant agreements of the association's fourth annual meeting, to be held from May 7 to 11 this year in Manila, capital of the Philippines.

Delegates' proposals at the meeting included establishing an AAPP council of senior advisors, making a compilation of laws with each member parliament submitting 20 laws to the AAPP Secretariat, and setting up an AAPP website to help information sharing between AAPP members.

The AAPP is a regional organization with 37 members representing parliaments from countries in Asia and the south Pacific as well as sovereign countries with territories in Asia.
