Symposium Held in HK to Mark Jiang Zemin's Speech on Taiwan
A symposium was held Saturday in Hong Kong to mark the eighth anniversary of the issuance of the Eight-Point Proposal on Peaceful Reunification of the Motherland, put forward by Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

Participants said it is a holy mission for the Chinese people to realize the reunification of the motherland and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Xing Kuishan, director general of the Taiwan Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), said Jiang Zemin's report at the recent 16th National Congress of the Communist Partyof China (CPC) clearly showed the continuity and stability of the central authorities' policy on the Taiwan issue, and the CPC's great goodwill and sincerity in resolving the issue.
The central government official said the development of the cross-Straits relations showed that the proposal is a mighty ideological weapon for safeguarding the state sovereignty and territorial integrity, and acts as a guideline for expanding the cross-Straits exchanges.
Secretary for Constitutional Affairs of the SAR Government Stephen Lam said the "one country, two systems" theory has proven successful during the five years since Hong Kong's handover, and "we will demonstrate the vivid successful example to the Taiwan residents."
Tsang Hin-chi, chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong, noted that President Jiang's report at the CPC's 16th National Congress stressed that there is only one Chinain the world, and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China.He said the report is "a complete and scientific expatiation of the one China principle."
Other participants also spoke highly of Jiang's proposal, regarding it as a guideline for the solution of the Taiwan issue under the "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems" principle. They said the report demonstrated the determination of China's leadership for the reunification and reflected the wishes of the Chinese people both at home and overseas.
The forum was hosted by Hong Kong-based newspaper Wen Wei Po. Participants include Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress, the Hong Kong members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, and representatives from the local educational and business circles.
