At 9:00 a.m. on Friday, the headquarters of the Beijing Public Security Bureau received an urgent call saying a van carrying money had been robbed near the Yonghe Lamasery and the robbers were fleeing in a northwesterly direction.
Soon after, a "film scenario" occurred: a 110 patrol car sped in hot pursuit of the fleeing van along a highway, and within ten minutes another police car suddenly outflanked the van in the opposite direction. The van was forced to halt and police soon overpowered the robbers.
However, this was no film scenario but an anti-robbery exercise launched by the Municipal Public Security Bureau before the upcoming Spring Festival.
The exercise aimed to curb the number of robberies of vans carrying money and speed up police reactions when a robbery really happened, a bureau source said.
Police also used a Global Positioning System (GPS) in the exercise to pinpoint the position of the robbed van and its driving direction.
Similar exercises have been held several times in the capital city since Jan. 20.
