Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Friday in Beijing that China will continue to provide assistance to the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), and hopes it will become a very active forum in Asia.
Jiang made the remarks during a meeting with Fidel Ramos, former president of the Philippines and now chairman of the BFA, and other directors.
Jiang said the forum provided a new stage of dialog and cooperation for all Asian countries, and complemented cooperation between governments. The forum, which had attracted the attention of many other countries outside Asia, would help promote exchanges and cooperation between Asia and the other parts of the world.
Jiang personally attended the inauguration of the forum in southern China's Hainan Province in February 2001. Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji attended the first annual conference last year.
The theme of this year's annual conference will be "Asia seeking mutual development through cooperation," which Jiang described as "very good" and said he hoped the conference would be a success.
The president said the Hainan Provincial Government had greatly improved the infrastructure at the small resort town of Boao. He believed the directors would work together to make the forum a success.
Ramos and other members of the board said the forum had played an important role in increasing regional development and exchanges, and was a very good channel for promoting cooperation in Asia.
Ramos said all members of the forum should work together for economic development and the improvement of understanding and cooperation in Asia.
