Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing said Thursday in Bangkok that the king and royal family of Thailand have played an indispensable role in deepening mutual understanding and friendship between the people of China and Thailand.

Li made the remark during a meeting with King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej on Thursday. He agreed with the proposition made by a member of the Thai royal family that the two countries in turn hold joint music concerts.

Li said he had friendly and fruitful talks with Thai Deputy Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh on Thursday. The two sides agreed to further tap the great potential of bilateral and regional cooperation and greatly promote cooperation in such fields as politics, economy, culture, education, sports, science and technology.

He also conveyed the warm greetings from Chinese President Jiang Zemin to the king.

The king expressed satisfaction with the smooth development of bilateral relations and admired the great achievements China has gained during the reform.

Members of the royal family frequently visit China, he said, adding that they are eager to know changes in China, to contact Chinese people and learn from China's experience in economic and social development, especially those in infrastructure construction and water resources development.

He noted that the royal family has great interests in improving exchanges between Thailand and China in the fields of culture, education and technique and science. He wished the two sides would make further efforts to broaden their cooperation in various fields so as to benefit the people of both countries.
