Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday briefed his US counterpart George W. Bush about his envoy's recent negotiations in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), saying that there were good chances to defuse the nuclear crisis around the country.
In a telephone call to Bush, Putin briefed Bush on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Losyukov's visit to Pyongyang, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.
"The president underlined that in the opinion of the Russian side, after the meeting in Pyongyang, a good basis can be seen fora productive dialogue with the DPRK with the aim of lessening the severity of the crisis and bringing the so-called 'DPRK nuclear problem' to a political settlement," the Kremlin said.
The two leaders also agreed to continue diplomatic contacts on the DPRK issue, it said.
As to Iraq, Putin said that "the main criterion" in assessing the situation should be the weapons inspectors' findings, which are to be presented to the UN Security Council on Jan. 27.
