Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Thursday his government is making extraordinary efforts fora peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis.
Gul made the remarks at a luncheon hosted in his honor by the Association of Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen (TUSIAD) in Istanbul.
"War should not be preferred. It is actually not beneficial to anybody," he said, adding that "we have to exhaust all ways to solve the Iraq issue peacefully."
Gul noted that the tension in Iraq is escalating dangerously, saying as a country in this region, Turkey can neither just watch what is going on nor keep silent.
This responsibility has started to be felt by other countries, Gul said, adding foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Syria,Saudi Arabia, Iran would convene in Istanbul later in the day for the first time for a way out.
Some other meetings might be held in the coming days under the decisions to be taken during the Istanbul meeting, according to Gul.
Regional countries would be affected directly by a possible US-led war on Iraq, Gul warned, saying Turkey is still suffering from political and economic losses of the 1991 Gulf War.
