The bulk of China's college graduates from last year have found jobs. By the end of December, a total of 80 percent of the almost 1.5 million graduates had settled into employment.

As in the past, major cities and provinces in China such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong led the nation in soaking up the graduate influx. Most of the students took up jobs either in the civil services, staterun business or the private sector. Each of these major areas made up about one third of the total.

Apart from those swotting up for the postgraduate exam, only about 100,000 were left without employment.

The number of college graduates is set to rise this year because the nation expanded the college enrollment in 1999. The number, which exceeds over 2 million, is 46 percent up on the 2002 figure.
