Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing has called on developing countries to enhance their unity and cooperation while stressing the importance of necessary assistance by developed countries to developing countries.

Li made the statement on Tuesday while he met with Naledi Pandor, chairman of the National Council of Provinces of South Africa in Cape Town.

He assured the South African leader that China supports and will actively participate in the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) advocated by South Africa.

"China will also take concrete measures to promote cooperation between China and all African countries through the Sino-African cooperation forum," he added.

Speaking about South Africa, he said "South Africa is the country which enjoys the fastest economic development on the African continent. There is a broad prospect for mutual cooperation between China and South Africa."

He said that the two countries can promote their cooperation in such fields as infrastructure, agriculture, science, technology, tourism and culture. Concrete steps should be taken to advance the development of South-South cooperation.

Li Lanqing arrived in South Africa on Jan. 19 and concluded his visit on Jan. 22. During his three-day visit to South Africa, he also met with South African President Thabo Mbeki and Deputy President Jacob Zuma.

Pandor said that he fully agreed with Li's view in regards with the development in Africa.

She said that the developing countries now face challenges not only from their own development but also from the globalization.

The close South-South cooperation will first bring about benefit to the developing countries, and it will also benefit the global peace and development, she added.

She said that the close cooperation between South Africa and China should be a good example for the South-South cooperation and will make active contribution to peace, stability and development in the world.
